Under 19 girls National week: Shania-Lee Swart - Selected for SA Girls Under 19 team
Shania-Lee Swart is not just a pretty face. She is a young lady performing in more than one sport at provincial level. She is the captain of the under 19 girls team, and is also playing for our provincial womens' team. Now she just took it one step further and her name is on everyones lips by hitting a magnificent 160 runs from only 86 deliveries, to give Mpumalanga a 42 run victory over Easterns, in the T20 leg of the Cricket South Africa (CSA) Girls under-19 Week in Pretoria on Monday.
What makes Shania's performance very unique, is that she was the only batter to score runs in her side’s 169-run total, with the remaining 9 runs, been conceded with extras by the opposition.
Shania’s incredible innings included 18 boundaries with 12 sixes, while the eight wickets to fall yielded no runs. Tumi Sekukune was the chief destroyer, taking an excellent five wickets for 15 runs, with Rode de Neysschen and Dieketseng Nchapeleng returning a wicket each.
Easterns’ reply only featured a half-century from Carmen Nagel (63 runs off 49 balls) while the rest of the batting line-up struggled. De Neysschen’s 19 runs off 20 balls was the second highest score, ending off a disappointing batting effort. Shania also returned the best bowling figures (2/21) for her side to round off a extraordinary performance by the youngster.
On the heels of that confidence-boosting win, Mpumalanga went on to claim a seven-wicket victory in their second match against Kei. Swart, Charlize Swanepoel and Njabulo Nkabinde returned figures of 2/6, 2/12 and 2/29 to restrict the Eastern Cape side to 79/8 at the end of their allotted overs.
They then made quick work of the chase, reaching their 80-run target in only 15 overs. Shania (19) once again put her hand up along with Jammie de Vos (18*) and Angelica Vos (12*) to take their side to an easy win in the end.
We would like to congratulate Shania on being selected for the SA Team. We are very proud of her and acknowledge her hard and dedication.
