The biggest schools cricket competition in South Africa reaches its climax in Potchefstroom on the weekend of 18 February when six schools, representing the six franchises, played in the national finals of the Cricket South Africa (CSA) Schools Twenty20 (T20) Challenge.
More than 600 schools across the country took part in the competition, which ran over a period of nearly five months. As the competition moved into the later stages, schools were knocked out, with the strongest going through to a provincial final.
The winners of the provincial finals played against the winners of the other provinces making up that area’s franchise.
For Nelspruit hoërskool, it was their first experience of playing at the national finals. Potchefstroom Gimnasium beat Parktown Boys High in the Highveld Lions franchise final, while Hoërskool Nelspruit caused something of an upset when they beat Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool.
CSA General Manager of Cricket and former head of the High Performance Centre, Corrie van Zyl, was delighted that new schools were coming to the fore.
“It shows that the cricketing structures that have been put in place are working, and we’re growing the base. We are looking at different sources for potential talent, and that is always good.”
“Twenty20 cricket is here to stay, and coaches need to take it seriously.”
There is substantial prize money, earmarked for cricket development, at stake, with R30 000 for the winners of the provincial final, and another R30 000 for the regional final. The winners of the National finals will receive a total of R100 000.00 in prize money.
The finalists have been divided into two pools, with Nelspruit, Paarl and Westville in Pool A, and Grey, Noord Kaap and Potchefstroom in Pool B. The winners of the two pools played in the final on Sunday 19 February 2012.
